Shandong is a coastal province of the People's Republic of China, and is part of the East China region.
Shandong has played a major role in Chinese history from the beginning of Chinese civilization along the lower reaches of the Yellow River and served as a pivotal cultural and religious site for Taoism, Chinese Buddhism, and Confucianism.
The province is located on the eastern edge of the North China Plain and in the lower reaches of the Yellow River. The northwestern, western, and southwestern parts of the province are all part of the vast North China Plain. The centre of the province is more mountainous, with Mount Tai being the most prominent. The east of the province is the hilly Shandong Peninsula extending into the sea; it separates Bohai Sea in the northwest from the Yellow Sea to the east and south. The highest peak of Shandong is the highest peak in the Taishan area: Jade Emperor Peak, with a height of 1,545 metres (5,069 ft).
Jinan city is the capital city of Shandong province, with an area of 8,177 km². Its population was 7,067,900 in 2014 with an urban population of 4,693,700. Jinan is located in the middle of Shandong province, with coordinates of 36.6512° N, 117.1200° E. The address of its government building is: China, Shandong, Jinan, Lixia District, Longding Ave-1. The author lives just across the street.
Shandong has a temperate climate, lying in the transition between the humid subtropical and humid continental zones with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and rainy, while winters are cold and dry. Average temperatures are −5 to 1 °C in January and 24 to 28 °C in July. Annual precipitation is 550 to 950 mm.
The politics of Shandong is structured in a dual party-government system like all other governing institutions in mainland China.
The Governor of Shandong is the highest-ranking official in the People's Government of Shandong. However, in the province's dual party-government governing system, the Governor has less power than the Shandong Communist Party of China Provincial Committee Secretary, named the "Shandong CPC Party Chief".
